Estimating storm discharge and water quality data uncertainty: A software tool for monitoring and modeling applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Uncertainty estimates corresponding to measured hydrologic and water quality data can contribute to improved monitoring design, decision-making, model application, and regulatory formulation. With these benefits in mind, the Data Uncertainty Estimation Tool for Hydrology and Water Quality (DUET-H/ WQ) was developed from an existing uncertainty estimation framework for small watershed discharge, sediment, and N and P data. Both the software and its framework-basis utilize the root mean square error propagation methodology to provide uncertainty estimates instead of more rigorous approaches requiring detailed statistical information, which is rarely available. DUET-H/WQ lists published uncertainty information for data collection procedures to assist the user in assigning appropriate data-specific uncertainty estimates and then calculates the uncertainty for individual discharge, concentration, and load values. Results of DUET-H/WQ application in several studies indicated that substantial uncertainty can be contributed by each procedural category (discharge measurement, sample collection, sample preservation/storage, laboratory analysis, and data processing and management). For storm loads, the uncertainty was typically least for discharge ( 7–23%), greater for sediment ( 16–27%) and dissolved N and P ( 14–31%) loads, and greater yet for total N and P ( 18–36%). When these uncertainty estimates for individual values were aggregated within study periods (i.e. total discharge, average concentration, and total load), uncertainties followed the same pattern (Q < TSS < dissolved N and P < total N and P). This rigorous demonstration of uncertainty in discharge and water quality data illustrates the importance of uncertainty analysis and the need for appropriate tools. It is our hope that DUET-H/WQ contributes to making uncertainty estimation a routine data collection and reporting procedure and thus enhances environmental monitoring, modeling, and decision-making. Hydrologic and water quality data are too important for scientists to continue to ignore the inherent uncertainty. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Data Uncertainty Estimation Tool for Hydrology and Water Quality (DUET-H/WQ): Estimating Measurement Uncertainty for Monitoring and Modelling Applications
In spite of advanced modelling capabilities, hydrologic and water quality data remain vital for scientific assessment, management, decision-making, and modelling. Although uncertainty in measured data affects all of these applications, measurement uncertainty is typically ignored in monitoring projects. To change this, we published an uncertainty estimation framework for measured discharge and ...
متن کاملMonitoring Event-Based Suspended Sediment Concentration by Artificial Neural Network Models
This paper is concerned with monitoring the hourly event-based river suspended sediment concentration (SSC) due to storms in Jiasian diversion weir in southern Taiwan. The weir is built for supplying 0.3 million tons of water per day averagely for civil and industrial use. Information of suspended sediments fluxes of rivers is crucial for monitoring the quality of water. The issue of water qual...
متن کاملReview of Existing Stormwater Monitoring Programs for Estimating Bight-wide Mass Emissions from Urban Runoff
Urban runoff is perceived as a large source of pollutant inputs to the ocean, but no mass emission monitoring programs have been established to assess this discharge. Recently, however, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits for urban runoff discharges were issued to stormwater management agencies on a regional (county-wide) basis and the 1994-95 water year represents the first...
متن کاملUsing hysteresis analysis of high-resolution water quality monitoring data, including uncertainty, to infer controls on nutrient and sediment transfer in catchments.
A large proportion of nutrients and sediment is mobilised in catchments during storm events. Therefore understanding a catchment's hydrological behaviour during storms and how this acts to mobilise and transport nutrients and sediment to nearby watercourses is extremely important for effective catchment management. The expansion of available in-situ sensors is allowing a wider range of water qu...
متن کاملA Case Study of Water Quality Modeling of the Gargar River, Iran
Human activities in the recent years have considerably increased the rate of water pollution in many regions of the world. In this case study, the main sources of wastewater discharging into the Gargar River were identified. Using river and point source flow rates and water quality parameters measured along the river, the river water quality was simulated using a commonly used, one-dimensional ...
